Hi lovelies. It’s been a while without any talk of this fantastic book club we have together. Possible because we need books to read. I am taking the initiative to come up with some suggestions, as I am currently at my cabin by the sea working on my dissertation and have a craving to do anything but the dissertation. Right now I am reading Memoirs of a Beatnik by Diane di Prima, a very interesting book with a female perspective on the beat generation. As I am almost done with it I am not sure it qualifies for our book club, but as long we are planning to talk about our book only once after we’ve all read it, it doesn’t really matter. Anyway, that is suggestion number uno. Second suggestion is Egalia’s Daughters by the norwegian author Gerd Brantenberg. It deals with a fictional universe where men and women have switched roles, women as the subject and men as he object. I have read her other books and they are a absolutely delight. Also there is a family rumor that my aunt have had some sexy time with her. Unfortunately both Memoirs of a Beatnik and Egalia’s Daughters might be hard to get a hold of, so I have two other suggestions that are hopefully easier to access. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin is my third suggestion. The book is often mentioned when talking about feminist science fiction, it deals with a genderless planet where the inhabitant can select their own sex when having intercourse. It is part of a series though, but the book seem to have a start and a ending, I think (I hope). Fourth suggestions is lovely Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, a book about a fictional society where men are in total control and women are made into slaves, a total opposite of Egalia’s Daughters, which I think is interesting. Perhaps in the future we could compare the two. That’s all folks, I hope to get great suggestions from you as well. Miss you and hope to see you soon.
Some sci-fi, parallel universes and one beatnik.
